Windsurfing at Gran Canaria

The Canary Islands is the only place in Europe with the conditions required for practising one of the most important sports in the world: tow-in surfing. This modality consists of surfing in extreme conditions with huge waves, usually more typical of the Pacific coast.

These sports, especially surfing, attract younger people, for whom the Islands have become a point of references, as they are the venues for some of the most important Spanish and international competitions.

The Ruano sisters, Daida and Iballa, who come from Pozo Izquierdo, in Gran Canaria, have been and are the world windsurfing champions in different modalities.

As part of their love for this sport and the islands, they organise a yearly clinic in Gran Canaria with the 40 best windsurfers in the world. They also participate in different activities such as surf camps or surf trips in order to advertise the islands’ conditions for windsurfing, in view of the crystal clear water, the winds and the lack of massification. these two world windsurfing champions and other internationally renowned surfers are the best example of the possibilities available in the Canary Islands.
